The neutron bomb
After I completed grade nine In the summer of 1958 I played midget baseball in the town of Burlington in the Golden Horseshoe. In that same year while Sam Cohen conducted research on developing a large thermonuclear weapon, he introduced the idea of removing the uranium casing from a hydrogen bomb. This would allow neutrons to travel great distances and penetrate even heavily shielded armour and structures.
In 1962 the first neutron device was successfully tested. In that same year Linus Pauling won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to stop the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, and the "Ban the Bomb" movement spread. I played my last game of baseball and began my travelling-pioneering for the Canadian Baha’i community at the end of that summer of ’62. The death of Marilyn Monroe in August of ’62 set off another bomb and a whole world of the most debated conspiracy theories.-Ron Price with thanks to 1Pioneering Over Five Epochs, and 2 Wikipedia, 22 June 2011. They were busy years for me back then from ’58 to ’62 finishing primary school, going to high school, playing midget and juvenile baseball with football in the fall and hockey in the winter. I knew little to nothing about neutron bombs, beautiful Marilyn Monroe or much beyond that complacent trinity of Protestant, Jew, & Catholic, although a new religion came Into town that my mother was interested in and I went with her to their meetings in those years back then and I’m still going to them 50 years later in another small town.1 1 The Baha’i Faith in George Town Tasmania Ron Price 22 June 2011
