How does a rocket work?

Whenever i see a rocket launch in Television... i use to wonder.. how does it works.. how does it propel in the atmosphere and reach the sky. can anyone explain.. how a rocket engine perfroms to make it reach very far distances in quick time?

I've been told since Grade 4 that it's the result of Newton's Third Law of Motion. We did an experiment when we blew a balloon then we put a hole to it and the balloon flies opposite of the hole. It's just like that.

how does a rocket work? why don't you type the same question in google, you will find tons of answers i believe. a rocket moves by surpassing earth's gravitational pull.

It is the best question in google,so you will find tons of answers i believe. a rocket moves by surpassing earth's gravitational pull.
